The Mathews Blue Devils boys’ basketball teams hosted the Middlesex Chargers last Thursday, and the junior varsity matchup delivered an exciting finish. The JV Blue Devils pulled off a thrilling one-point win in a hard-fought defensive battle. Middlesex came out firing, hitting two early three-pointers to jump out to a 6-0 lead. Mathews responded quickly, chipping away and taking the lead by the end of the first quarter. The second quarter turned into a defensive battle, with both teams combining for just 10 total points. The Blue Devils managed to hold onto a slim lead heading into halftime. Coming out of the locker room, neither team backed down. The Devils maintained a narrow advantage and entered the fourth quarter up by two. Despite trailing for most of the game, the Chargers went on a late run and took a six-point lead with four minutes remaining.
