The Mathews High School junior varsity boys’ basketball team didn’t wait long to make a statement this season. The JV Blue Devils are off to a strong 3–1 start, showing they can light up the scoreboard while also locking in on defense. Through four games, Mathews is averaging close to 40 points per game and giving up just over 21. With a roster stacked with sophomores, freshmen, and eighth graders, the future of the Blue Devils’ basketball program is already on display. Mathews opened the season at home on Dec. 11 against Charles City and set the tone with a dominant 37–7 win. The Blue Devils attacked the basket, got to the free-throw line 11 times, and shared the ball all night. Nine different players scored in the opener, showing just how deep this team is. Eighth grader Aiden Forest led the way with seven points, while sophomore Treye Church and freshman Brandon Hubbard added six each.
