JAMES LYNWOOD ARTHUR

Goodbyes are not forever. Goodbyes are not the end. They simply mean I’ll miss you, until we meet again.

–Anonymous

On the evening of Sept. 3, 2013, James Lynwood Arthur, 77, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. Jim was comforted and surrounded by family members at his home in Gloucester, Va., at the time of his passing.

He was born in the town of Fincastle in western Virginia on Nov. 17, 1935. He was the only child of Walter James and Clifford Elizabeth Alls Arthur.

Jim learned at an early age how to overcome obstacles that appeared in his path; at age three he was stricken with pneumonia which left him unable to walk. Recovering at age four he then had to learn how to walk once again.

In 1940, Jim moved with his parents to Newport News, Va., where he became very passionate about growing produce. He worked beside his father doing just that throughout his childhood well into his high school days.

After graduating from Warwick High School, Jim enlisted into the United States Army which brought him many opportunities and adventures. Jim was stationed in England from 1955-1958. One evening in England Jim met the love of his life, Kathleen Littlemoore, and stated within the first few hours of being acquainted, “I’m going to marry you.” And he did just that. Moving back to the States the happy couple made their home in Mathews, living there for over 50 years.

He retired as produce manager from the A&P Store in Mathews, and worked for a number of years at Best Value Supermarket.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Arthur, Gloucester; son, Carl Arthur, Gloucester; beloved daughter, Heidi Arthur, Pottstown, Pa.; son, John and wife Elizabeth and their son Oliver Arthur, Richmond; grandson, Jimmy and wife Krizma and their daughter Peyton Arthur, Gloucester; grandson, Jason and wife Cathy and their daughter Tru Arthur, Gloucester; his faithful companion, Sophie Mae (Corgi).

Special thanks to dear friend Dr. Fredrick Arnold and staff, RWH Nursing Staff, Riverside Hospice and Hogg Funeral Home for all the aid, support and care provided to Jim and his family through this very difficult time.

At his request no funeral or ceremony will be held. The family will continue to honor his final wishes.
