Irene brings out the best in local residents

Hurricane Irene might have left local residents literally in the dark for a few days, but it also brought out the best in a lot of good people.

Elizabeth Rowe of Harcum, said she wouldn’t have known what to do without the help of family and friends. Her husband, Harvey, is disabled, and the two would have had a tough time fending for themselves during the six days they went without power.

"People were so kind to help us," said Elizabeth.

The couple’s daughter, Brenda Andreoli, drove up from North Carolina to stay with her parents. She became the chief cook, using a stove with propane burners that her father made in days past. One neighbor stopped in before the storm to put all the deck furniture in the barn, another dropped by to start up the generator, and others came by with food or ice, or just called to check on the family.

"God blessed us," said Elizabeth. "We thank the Lord over and over."
