After filming last weekend at Williams Wharf Landing, a group from Hydrow—the virtual rowing machine similar in concept to the Peleton exercise cycle—have nothing but praise for the Mathews location.
Hydrow members primarily split their time between Miami and Boston, but its world-class rowers have filmed in venues everywhere from England and Scotland to San Francisco and the Gulf of Mexico.
Nick Karwoski, Hydrow experience operations lead, said that he and his team have moved the Mathews community, the facility and access at Williams Wharf and the East River rowing experience to the top of their list of best rowing venues.
Karwoski brought his team to Mathews to produce scenic experiences of rowing on the East River, technique and training episodes and a travelogue describing what is special about Mathews and its waterfront culture.
Hydrow photographer Jimmy Ahern said he appreciated help from Mobjack and Mathews rowing founder and coach Tim Ulsaker, who hosted and assisted Hydrow’s access. “Thank you for everything; your community is special,” Ahern told Ulsaker. “I hope our photos and videos can help you continue to grow your rowing programs in this beautiful town. I cannot express how grateful I am to have spent but a few days on this blessed body of water.”
The Hydrow is designed and built by rowers and its video monitor brings a user the experience of complete low-impact exercise, connection with other rowers in a boat and the “swing” of rowing together through virtual videos shot on prime rowing waters around the world.
“Last Saturday would have been my 32nd consecutive year of running the annual Mathews Invitational Crew Regatta at Williams Wharf,” Ulsaker said. “While it is sad it could not be run, I am extremely grateful that Hydrow will be featuring high-quality worldwide videos of what thousands of rowers have discovered through our rowing programs and regattas over the past 35 years.”
