Historical Society to meet at Holly Knoll

Dr. Robert Russa Moton, his home Holly Knoll, and the Gloucester Institute will be the topic of Sunday’s presentation of the Gloucester Historical Society in Virginia.

The group’s quarterly meeting will be held at 2 p.m. on the grounds of Holly Knoll. The meeting is open to the public. After the presentation, refreshments will be served.

Dr. Moton was one of the most influential African-American educators and leaders of his generation. A graduate of Hampton University, he became the commandant of the male cadet corps there (the equivalent of dean of men). Moton was later the second administrator of the Tuskegee Institute following the death of its founder, Booker T. Washington. Moton held that position for 20 years until his retirement in 1935.

Holly Knoll, a two-and-a-half story brick home on the York River, was Dr. Moton’s retirement home. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1981.
