Hershel C. Shackelford Jr. of Achilles, left this life much too soon at the age of 76 on Nov. 29, 2018.

Hershel attended Christchurch School and graduated from Gloucester High School, Class of 1960. In 1964, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business from Richmond Professional Institute (now VCU). After graduation, Hershel served in the Air National Guard.

Following his Guard service, Hershel married Virginia Faison, his dedicated wife of 50 years. They made their home in Gloucester, where Hershel worked with his dad in the family oil business, H.C. Shackelford & Son, Inc. Later he established and operated his own trucking business, H.C. Shackelford Hauling. Hershel was known for his sharp wit, dedication to his family and friends and for his interest in community affairs.

Hershel was preceded in death by his son, Hershel Cartwright “Carter” Shackelford III, and parents, Hershel C. Sr. and Minnie Shackelford.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Virginia F. Shackelford; sister, Nancy Shackelford Jones and her husband Jeff Jones, and three nieces, Ashley Moss, Catherine Jones and Alexandra Thorne.

Funeral services conducted by Preacher Cliff Manuel and the Rev. Richard Whiteheart will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, 2018, at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.  Interment will follow in Providence Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday, Dec. 6, 2018, from 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
