Hearing tonight on Mathews budget, tax rates

The Mathews County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing at 6 o’clock tonight on the proposed $31,009,157 budget and tax rates for fiscal year 2023-2024. The meeting will be held in the historic courthouse on Court Street.

The proposed real estate and mobile home tax rate for the coming year is $0.56 per $100 of assessed value, reduced from the current rate of $0.64 per $100 of assessed value.

Other proposed tax rates remain unchanged, including personal property at $3.70 per $100 of assessed value, boats at $1.45 per $100 of assessed value, and other personal property, machinery and tools, at $2.14 per $100 of assessed value.

Although the board had previously discussed setting an equalized real estate tax rate of $0.45 per $100 of assessed value based on the recent assessment, successful appeals of home values made to the assessment company have changed the equalization rate, said Mathews County Administrator Ramona Wilson.
