A head-on accident between a 2003 Volkswagen convertible and a tractor trailer in Middlesex Saturday morning resulted in the deaths of two Middlesex County residents.

According to a press release from the Virginia State Police, the Volkswagen was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Rt. 17 near Briary Swamp Road at 3:33 a.m. when it collided with the tractor trailer.

Both the occupants of the Volkswagen—the female driver, Amberly Joy Wingfield, 22, of Linden Avenue in Urbanna, and the male passenger, Bradley Carlton Wingfield, 25, of Dirt Bridge Road in Topping—died on impact.

The tractor trailer ran off the roadway into the ditch, tipping over onto its side and spilling over 70 gallons of diesel fuel, said the release.

The accident was still under investigation on Saturday afternoon.
