GVFRS commended for help in Urbanna marina fire

Members of the Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, Inc., received formal recognition recently before the Gloucester County Board of Supervisors for the department’s assistance in battling a marina fire in Urbanna in February.

Gloucester sent two engines to the blaze, in which two people lost their lives, 21 boats burned, and the main portion of the Dozier’s Port Urbanna Marina was scorched.

“These folks came in and they worked hard,” said Mark Nugent, chief of emergency services for Middlesex County, who presented the certificate of appreciation to GVFRS. “We cannot do what we do in Middlesex by ourselves. We depend on our friends … it’s definitely a group effort in our business.”

“We got your pumper down to that creek and added another 1,000 gallons to that ladder truck; we started putting that fire out,” Nugent added.
