There has been a big change this year in how the Guinea women’s cakes will be available to enjoy. For eight years the cakes were offered in a silent auction, always bringing fabulous final bids with many going as high as $100 and then some. One year, the champion of them all was a chocolate layer cake whose winning bid reached $200.
This year there will be no Guinea Heritage Day and no cake auction. However, the Guinea cakes (a lovable and honorable term) will still be available, sold according to the marked price.
To replace Heritage Day is a four-weekend series of events leading up to the Guinea Jubilee on September 26 and 27.
One of the Saturdays is dedicated to cakes. Ginny Snowden, Betty Jordan and Rose Marie Smith are serving as co-chairmen.
It takes place this Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at Buck’s Store Museum, with all proceeds benefiting the Guinea Heritage Association.
