Grandma’s Pizzeria opens in Mathews Court House

Grandma’s Pizzeria, located on Buckley Hall Road near Mathews Laundry, opened for business Saturday—and sold out of its signature pizza four hours before closing time.

William “Billy” Skeans owns the restaurant with his mother, Geraldine “Gerri” Barry; both reside at Cobbs Creek. They said Monday morning that the restaurant was very busy both Saturday and Sunday.

The restaurant is named for Barry’s grandmother who, she said, was a very good cook. Barry’s father owned a pizzeria in New York for about 20 years. Barry previously was manager of a Norfolk business.

Skeans began as a maintenance man in Las Vegas, started hanging around the kitchen and was eventually hired as a line cook. After working there, he worked for several years at a restaurant in Myrtle Beach, S.C.—a total of eight years as a chef.
