The Gloucester- Mathews Humane Society broke ground last week on its new building project, The Williams Center, which will serve as an additional wing to its existing facility.
The Williams Center will not only enhance our ability to connect people and pets, “but also serve as a welcoming space for learning, collaboration and celebration,” said Tina Leone, chief executive officer of GMHS, during the April 17 groundbreaking.
The goal of the new wing is to help expand community involvement through classes and events and provide vital workspace for staff and volunteers.
Pet parenting classes, behavior and agility training for GMHS pets, yoga classes and cuddle sessions with shelter animals, children’s camps, community events and more are planned for the new space. The center will also provide temporary shelter for people and their pets during hurricanes and other crises.
Initial funding for the project was provided by The Dean & Cam Williams Foundation.
“Dean and Cam believed deeply in the power of the Gloucester community and recognized the importance of civic contribution,” said Diane Johnson, president of The Dean & Cam Williams Foundation. “The center embodies their legacy—a place where people, pets and community come together. We are honored to see their vision taking shape in such a meaningful way.”
GMHS is undergoing a fundraising campaign to support the construction. If $1 million is raised for the project, The Dean & Cam Williams Foundation has pledged a matching $1 million grant.
Spain Commercial Inc. has taken on the project with an anticipated completion date of early 2026.
