Gloucester’s population increases slightly; Mathews has 1.4 % drop

Gloucester County’s population continues to grow at a slow pace, while the population of Mathews County continues to decline, according to estimates released last week by the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service at the University of Virginia.

 

The newest figures, showing the estimated population for July 1, 2013, find 37,232 residents of Gloucester County, an increase of 1 percent from the 36,858 counted in the 2010 census. The estimate for 2012 was 36,976 people.

 

For Mathews, the estimated population at the midpoint of last year was 8,850 people, which is a decrease of 1.4 percent from the 2010 census figure of 8,978. The estimate for 2012 was 8,883 residents.

 

Virginia as a whole has grown 3.2 percent, for a population of 8.2 million, the Cooper Center found.

 

Neighboring counties have had varying experiences, according to the statistics.
