Gloucester County will receive more than $900,000 for the elevation of four flood-prone structures. The money comes from two hazard mitigation assistance programs, Flood Mitigation Assistance and the post-disaster Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.

The Virginia Department of Emergency Management received 75 percent of the project funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, for which the state covers 20 percent of the cost share, according to a VDEM release.

Depending on how a structure is categorized—repetitive loss or severe repetitive loss—the federal funding could be between 75 percent and 100 percent of the total project costs, the release stated.

“With our change in mitigation funding priorities to have a community impact, we are seeing projects that have a greater return on investment,” said VDEM state coordinator Jeff Stern. “These three projects are projected to save $3.34 for every $1 spent.”
