Three officers with the Gloucester Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division have recently received promotions.
Former Chief of Investigations Lt. Jamie Sharp was promoted to Captain of Law Enforcement on Nov. 6 and is overseeing the Uniform Patrol Division, the Investigations Division, School Resource Officers and the Special Operations Unit.
Sgt. Diane Smith was promoted to Lieutenant of Investigations and Investigator Mike Rice was promoted to Sergeant of Investigations. Both of those promotions were effective Dec. 1.
Sharp has a total of 21 years in law enforcement and 18 years with the GSO. As a lieutenant in investigations, he was in charge of nine investigators from 2017 to 2020.
He was a lieutenant in the Uniform Patrol Division overseeing a shift of six members performing daily patrol activities from 2012 to 2017 and prior to that, he was a sergeant in the Criminal Investigations Division. He is a two-time Supervisor of the Year Award recipient.
Sharp was a general assignment criminal investigator from 2004 to 2009, was a member of the Special Operations Unit from 2004 to 2009, and was a patrolman in the GSO from 2002 to 2004. Prior to joining the GSO, he was a patrolman/bicycle officer with the Newport News Police Department from 1999 to 2002.
Sharp holds a master’s degree in criminal justice from St. Leo University and a bachelor’s degree in governmental administration with a major in criminal justice from Christopher New University. He is also a 2014 graduate of the Professional Executive Leadership School at the University of Richmond.
Smith has been in law enforcement for over 21 years with the last 17 years in the GSO Criminal Investigations Division. Her training includes the Hampton Roads Regional Criminal Justice Academy Leadership Institute, FBI 1st Line Supervisor, Field Training Officer, General Instructor, Child First, Finding Words and various homicide trainings and seminars.
She received the GSO Supervisor of the Year Award and the Peninsula Crime Stopper Award. She earned an associate’s degree in administration of justice from Rappahannock Community College.
Rice has been in law enforcement for 19 years and with the GSO for nine years. He has been in the GSO Criminal Investigations Division for seven years and served on the Traffic Safety Unit and the Special Operations Unit. His training includes the HRRCJA Leadership Institute, FBI 1st Line Supervisor, Field Training Officer and General Instructor.
Rice is a three-time Terry Singleton Outstanding Achievement Award winner, has received the Peninsula Crime Stopper Award, and was a Williamsburg Top Cop recipient. He holds a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies/criminal justice and a master’s degree in forensic psychology, both from Liberty University.
In addition to his GSO duties, Rice teaches a dual enrollment criminal justice course at Gloucester High School.
