Gloucester was recently recognized on the Virginia Is For Lovers “Virginia’s Travel Blog” as one of five historic towns to visit in Coastal Virginia.

The Virginia Tourism Corporation blog points out that the county was once the site of Werowocomoco, the capital of the Powhatan Confederacy. It also states that the county was founded in 1651 and named for Henry Stuart, Duke of Gloucester.

It mentions that two colonial churches worth visiting—both Ware and Abingdon Episcopal—were each attended by Presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.

The blog also highlights the Battle of the Hook that took place in the county during the Revolutionary War while the Siege of Yorktown occurred simultaneously just a short distance away.
