Gloucester girls win district title for 16th straight year

The Gloucester High School varsity field hockey team capped off a nine-game win streak by defeating Woodside, 7-1, in a road game Monday. With the win, it marks the 16th straight year the Lady Dukes have won the Peninsula District championship.

Gloucester was led by three goals by freshman Aaliyah Mattocks, which was the first hat trick of her young career. Others contributing a single goal each were Mackenzi Reece, Peyton Sutton, Abby Junker and Emily Farrar.

Assists were dished out by Reese Miller who led with three followed by Charlotte Houtz with two and others receiving credit for one were Reece, Sutton, Junker, Mattocks, Kaylee Hall, McKayla Clark and Ayelu Mason. The team earned 16 penalty corners to giving up five and took 14 shots to giving up one on goal.

The Dukes now sit at 15-2 at the end of the regular season and will host the first round of regional playoffs next Wednesday, Nov. 6 at, 7 p.m. at the GHS stadium. Gloucester will face the winner of Phoebus and Manor, who open up play this week. The second regional quarterfinal game will feature Warhill and the winner of the Smithfield/Churchland game that was held Tuesday.

Season stats

On the season, Miller led the team in goals with 21, followed by Reece with 19 and Houtz with 14. Sutton has been coming on as of late and is up to 13.

For assists, Miller leads with 31 followed by Houtz with 25 and Reece with 13 and Sutton with 12 right on her heels. They have scored 115 goals while allowing 14 with 10 shutouts. They earned 212 penalty corners and gave up 85. They have taken 433 shots and allowed only 95 through 17 games.

Addy Zabicki has been the primary goaltender and made 76 saves while facing 90 shots for a .844 save percentage.
