Gloucester deputies talk to students about drunk driving

Gloucester Sheriff’s Office deputies Phil Lutz, Jeff Butler, Rob Richmond and Sgt. Paul Emanuelle conducted a program on Driving Under the Influence for Page and Peasley Middle School students at the Gloucester Boys and Girls Club on June 1.

Club director Gary Rippel played the role of a driver who appeared to be driving under the influence, allowing Emanuelle and Lutz to demonstrate how they conduct traffic stops and test the sobriety of drivers.

Richmond and Butler explained how officers work to ensure the safety of their fellow officers during traffic stops, and how they determine if a driver is under the influence of alcohol or an illegal substance, or if the driver has a medical condition that could impair driving.

The middle school students also participated in question-and-answer opportunities as part of the presentation. The officers reported that their presentation was well attended and well received by the soon-to-be drivers.
