Gloucester County recognized as ‘Certified Green Government’

Gloucester County was recognized at the 2010 Virginia Association of Counties Annual Conference and at Tuesday’s Gloucester County Board of Supervisors meeting as being named a Certified Green Government. The recognition was given by VACo as well as the Virginia Municipal League.

Gloucester County spokesperson Christi Lewis said the Green Government Challenge is a friendly competition designed to encourage jurisdictions to implement specific environmental policies and practical actions that reduce energy usage and promote sustainability by both local government and the broader community.

"Localities become certified ‘Green Governments’ by registering in the challenge and earning designated green points for implementing or adopting specific policies and actions across various categories," Lewis said. "Localities are required to accumulate at least 100 green points out of a possible 200 to earn certification as a Green Government," she added.
