The Ware River Circle of The King’s Daughters and Sons laid out the red carpet in a big way recently at a spring luncheon. The setting at Ware River Yacht Club brought light sea breezes from the river as guests entered. Inside, a glass of mimosa, wine, tea or water awaited guests. From the first sip to the last bite of pie or cake, the luncheon was an hour or two of complete southern hospitality.
Tables where the 120 guests would be seated were adorned with beautiful fresh spring flowers arranged in pint-size Cuthbert & Hughes, Bohannon, oyster cans. The long buffet table, centered by a gallon oyster can holding a much larger flower arrangement, was the focus of all eyes. The table was laden with dish after dish of epicurean home-cooking, including selections for vegetarians. There were several types of quiches, tomato, broccoli and vegetable mix salads, copper pennies and a special Greek tomato salad, to mention a few choices. The dessert table of Apple Dapple Cake and Chocolate Pie awaited.
And for a small sum you could fill a plate upon leaving, thus having your dinner already prepared.
As with this organization’s biggest fundraiser, the Christmas Open House in December, all the decorating and food preparation are provided by its members. The spring luncheon, although still creating funds, is basically when, according to Nancy Dwoyer, “we celebrate all of our hard work.”
The Ware River Circle of The King’s Daughters and Sons has been in existence since March 10, 1896. It is part of the Virginia Branch of the International Order of The King’s Daughters and Sons, a Christian organization organized in 1886 with the purpose of helping others.
For well over 100 years the Ware River Circle has worked to raise money for charitable purposes. The Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters received a check for $18,000, Gloucester-Mathews Care Clinic $3,000, Ronald McDonald House $33,000, Endowment Fund established in support of CHKD’s Child Abuse Center $5,000 and local charities receive annual donations in various amounts, a scholarship to Rappa-
hannock Community College to mention just one.
The members of this organization are not only great cooks and hostesses, they are also carrying on the motto chosen by the founders. This is a quote from Edward Everett Hale: “Look up and not down, look forward and not back, look out and not in, and lend a hand.”
