Giving thanks

While most Gloucester and Mathews residents celebrate Thanksgiving by gathering with their families, a few people in each county volunteer their time to spread cheer to the wider community, welcoming anyone and everyone to the table. At the Courthouse Restaurant in Gloucester, owners Doug and Kim Hibbs, Dawn Mickelson and her husband  Josh Hibbs, standing from left, annually give their entire staff the day off and, with the help of friends and patrons, feed hundreds of their neighbors. Although the doors opened at noon this year, people started lining up for the popular annual event shortly after 11 a.m., said Kim Hibbs. By 1:15 p.m., only 75 of the 300 rolls that were baked were left, said Hibbs, and the doors were slated to stay open until 4 p.m. “When we run out of rolls, we’ll serve sliced bread,” she said with a smile.
