The Gloucester High School varsity softball team defeated the Kecoughtan Warriors at home last Wednesday by a 12-7 margin.
The Lady Dukes took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, with Grace Sinko Van-Liew’s single, driving in two runs. In the third, Gloucester added three more runs as Kimber Rainey and Samantha Carlton each hit a single, bringing runners home and stretching the team’s lead to 7-0.
Kecoughtan came back to score three runs during the top of the fourth inning, but Rainey brought two runners home with a single at the bottom of the fourth.
Hailey Hardaway added an RBI single in the sixth inning. Chickey Boles hit a single in the seventh inning, driving in two runs to raise the final score to 12-7.
Manor
The Lady Dukes lost to the Mustangs from Manor High School in Portsmouth on Friday, 2-1. Manor scored one run in the first inning and took a 2-0 lead in the fourth. Makayla Hernandez hit a single in the sixth inning and later scored on a Mustang throwing error. Jayanna Richards pitched well in the loss, giving up seven hits while striking out six.
Gloucester will return to action next Wednesday, April 13, at home against the Woodside Wolverines. The team will then travel to Woodside the following day. First pitch for both games is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
