The GHS Dukes field hockey team finished up the first half of the regular season with a split in the last two games.
They dropped a hard-fought loss 2-0 in a game on Thursday at Great Bridge High School in a battle of top five teams in Hampton Roads. They were outshot 7-4 and the Wildcats earned 10 penalty corners to the Dukes’ 6.
The Dukes got back on the winning trail with a commanding win at home over the Raiders of Warwick High School 15-0 played on Tuesday.
Twelve different players scored, highlighted by Aaliyah Mattocks and Maddie Rowe scoring their first career varsity goals.
Other players scoring goals included Charlotte Houtz, Mackenzi Reece, Peyton Sutton, Chloe West, Mary Ashton VanFossen and Maddie Kadel. Hannah Symonds scored a hat trick with three goals and Ayelu Mason and Reese Miller each had 2.
Thirteen players had assists with Miller leading the way with five and Reece chipping in three more helpers.
The Dukes took 61 shots on goal and allowed none. They earned 20 and gave up zero penalty corners. The team as a whole has played very well.
Several milestones are being reached on the team. Charlotte Houtz contributed her 50th career assist. Mackenzi Reece is closing in on 50 goals (47) and 50 assists (46) in her career. Reese Miller now stands in third place on the all-time goal scoring list behind Channy Johnson (101) and Cassidy Goodwin (102). She is also nearing 100 career assists and 300 points in her career.
At the halfway point of the season, the team stands at 7-2. They have scored 55 goals while allowing 11. They have taken 213 shots on goal and allowed 59. They have earned 114 penalty corners and allowed 54. They have learned a lot about each other and are gaining trust and chemistry with each game played.
Next up for the Dukes will be two games at a tournament in Richmond at the Trinity Episcopal School versus Mountain View High School (8-4) and The Covenant School (6-3) out of Charlottesville over the next weekend.
