Junior varsity
Gloucester junior varsity field hockey players improved to 6-0 on the season with two recent wins. Last Thursday, the junior Dukes dominated an overmatched Bethel team, 13-0, in a game shortened by the mercy rule on the Bruins’ field.
Gloucester coach Joe Dougherty said because of the lack of jayvee programs in the Peninsula District, this marked the first game of the season for the Bruins. Many of their players had just started playing field hockey a couple of weeks prior to the game.
Eleven different Gloucester players found the back of the cage in the win, led by Hannah Hamay and Megan Crowley with two goals each. Also adding to their goal counts were Meadow Spears, Madison Gross, Aubree Dorsey, Abbie Thornton, Lily Perger, Ella Poulson and Lauren Harvey.
Scoring was also accomplished by Kailee Morris and Talyn Winfrey, who notched their first goals of the season. Crowley had four scoring assists while Lucy Ramos and Perger had two each.
Dougherty said 17 of his 20 field players have now scored at least one goal. The team has tallied 60 goals over six games while allowing one and has taken over 200 shots while allowing seven.
The Gloucester jayvees beat visiting Nansemond River, 6-0, on Sept. 12 in yet another game shortened by the mercy rule. Dorsey led the way with two goals and goals were scored by Christina Riva, Hamay, Poulson and Crowley.
Crowley also had three scoring assists, Poulson had two and Alexis Adams and Hamay had one each. The team delivered 18 shots on goal while allowing one and earned eight penalty corners while allowing only one.
Defensively, the Dukes were led by Avery Smith, Jordan Scott, Erin Bell, Anna Owens and Spears. Goalkeeper Lexi Little had one save in the shutout. The junior Dukes are scheduled to host Menchville today.
