The Gloucester High School varsity field hockey team defeated the Powhatan Indians, 4-0, Tuesday night in the Class 4 state quarterfinal match at Dukes Stadium. This follows the team’s Thursday night win against the Grafton Clippers, which secured the Lady Dukes the Class 4 Region A title.
During the match against Powhatan, Gloucester outshot the Indians, 21-6, and earned 16 penalty corners, while allowing only five. Aaliyah Mattocks, Peyton Sutton, Ellary Miller and Ady Jeffrey each scored. Assists were credited to Charlotte Houtz with two and Mattocks, Hannah Symonds and Amelia Santiago with one apiece.
The defense was led by Hailee Johnston, A.V. Wymer, Santiago and Miller. The midfield was controlled by Houtz, Maddie Rowe and Kenleigh Hall. Addy Zabicki recorded six saves in goal.
Gloucester improved its season record to 18-3 at the conclusion of this match. The Lady Dukes will host the state semi-final game against Chancellor on Saturday.
