GHS boys’ soccer advances

Gloucester High School varsity soccer teams kicked off the Region 5A Playoff Tournament last week. The boys faced off against Hickory High School, and overcame a half-time deficit to advance to the next round of the tournament. The girls, however, fell to Nansemond River in overtime.

For the boys, Bobby Cox and Frank Kennedy managed to score Gloucester’s two points in the match. Head Coach Craig Raines said that Hickory scored in the first half and held the led until the second half. He said that Aaron Miller got the ball to Cox who took on a defender to even the score.

“The team stayed calm and never panicked in the entire game even being down a goal,” said RainesRaines said the Dukes second goal was scored off a corner kick by Kennedy. Dukes keeper, Riley Jayquish recorded 15 saves to keep the boys in the game. The final score was 2-1. The boys will face Cox High School in the semi-finals.For the girls, the match went into overtime after both teams were tied after 90 minutes. ...
