Galoris “Gee” Brownley of Mathews was recently recognized by Virginia State Parks as the 2024 Individual Volunteer of the Year.
Brownley volunteers at Machicomoco State Park in Hayes, immersing herself in a variety of opportunities. She has helped with educational programs, trail building, gardening, and native planting. She has been a volunteer since 2023 when Chief Ranger Josh Mazzatenta convinced her to join the volunteer team.
Brownley enjoys birding at the park and seeing the appreciation of both staff and visitors for her hard work. Her goal for 2025 is to surpass 400 hours of volunteering.
To become a volunteer, visit the state park website to complete an application. Applicants must successfully pass a background check to be approved for volunteering.
