Motorists preparing to hit the road for the July 4 holiday are feeling some pain at the pump, as gasoline prices are on the rise again.

AAA reported that the average price of a gallon of gasoline in Hampton Roads on June 25 was $3.57, or 17 cents higher than last year and 34 cents higher than 2012.

Across the commonwealth, the average price for regular unleaded gasoline was $3.49, the AAA report said, nine cents higher than last year in late June and 28 cents higher than in 2012.

“Violence keyed by the militant group known as ISIS (the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria) has continued to expand toward southern Iraq, where the majority of the country’s oil production is located,” said Georjeane Blumling, vice president/public affairs for AAA’s Tidewater operations based in Virginia Beach. “These concerns have helped to increase global oil prices, which makes it more expensive to produce gasoline.”
