Garnett Fleet South, 85, of Mathews, Va., departed this world on March 25, 2013.

He was born Sept. 15, 1927. He was a lifetime seaman and retired from the Merchant Marine as a chief mate. He served on the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph South; his mother, Mabel, and his granddaughter, Heidi Jo South.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Janice R. South, and his two sons, Michael G. South (Joan Evans) and Dale F. South (Melanie). He was a loving grandfather to Shannon Dean (Joshua), Dawn Sterling (Evan), Laura South, Blair Jarrell (Casey), Lance South, and his great-grandchildren, Riley and Zachary Dean.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. 

Arrangements are being handled by Andrews Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in his memory to Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad or a charity of your choice.
