Residents of the Winter Harbor area of Mathews got some good news last week. A big chunk of federal money has been awarded to dredge the harbor channel and open it up to the Chesapeake Bay once again. On top of that, there’s additional federal funding to pay for placing the dredge material on uplands. Rep. Rob Wittman (R-Montross) came to Mathews last Thursday to bring the good news, along with a pair of large novelty checks, one for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the amount of $2 million for dredging and another for the Middle Peninsula Chesapeake Bay Public Access Authority in the amount of $810,000 to pay for spoils placement. Standing in biting cold at the Winter Harbor public dock, Wittman told a small gathering of county officials and residents that he loved Mathews and knew how important dredging the harbor is to the county, so he made sure to get the funds earmarked in the latest funding bill, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday and headed to the pres...
