‘From Colony to Country’

The third and final performance of “From Colony to Country: The Revolutionary World of John Page and Lewis Burwell” was presented Sunday afternoon to 45-50 people at Gloucester’s historic courthouse. Set in the summer of 1775, Lewis Burwell of Fairfield visits John Page of Rosewell to ponder weighty decisions, as the two men’s wives and people enslaved by the two Gloucester families discuss their options and the impact of the looming break with the British crown. In photo above, Page (played by Bill Rose), left, and Burwell (played by Michael Pfeifer) discuss the news of the day, including Patrick Henry’s “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death” speech. The two are attended to by enslaved servant Isaac (played by Kieryn Burton), center, who is shown with fellow enslaved servant Nanny (played by Katrina Brown) in photo below, discussing how these events will affect them. The play was previously performed at Rosewell and at the Watermen’s Museum in Yorktown.
