A structure fire last Thursday evening in the 10000 block of New Hope Court in Gloucester destroyed a garage and did significant damage to a motor home in the yard and the exterior of the nearby home. According to Gloucester Fire Chief J.D. Clements, the owner of the home was outside burning yard debris and, thinking the fire had been extinguished, left it and went inside. He later noticed that his garage and motor home were on fire.The call came in at 6:50 p.m., said Clements, and the first unit left the station at 6:54 p.m., arriving on the scene at 7:05 p.m. Six engines, a tanker, and a rescue truck responded from Gloucester Volunteer Fire Department, along with 16 firefighters. In addition, Mathews Volunteer Fire Department rendered mutual aid with one engine, one tanker and 15 firefighters.
