Few local races contested this year

With the deadline for candidates to file to take part in the Nov. 3 General Election having passed on Tuesday, there are few contested races in Gloucester and Mathews counties.

In Gloucester, the only contested races this year are for Circuit Court Clerk, sheriff, and the Ware district and at-large school board seats. All county board of supervisor races remain uncontested.

In Mathews, the only local offices that are contested are county supervisor (where four candidates are vying for three seats) and sheriff.

For Gloucester clerk, Mary Hodges is challenging incumbent Margaret Walker, both as independent candidates. Walker is currently finishing her first eight-year term as clerk.

Ken Larson is up against Robin Rice for the Ware district school board seat. Both independent candidates are vying for the seat that is currently held by Kim Hensley, who is not running for reelection. Meanwhile, William “Jarret” Lee is up against incumbent Kevin Smith for the at-large seat on...
