Feathered friends

Tuesday was National Bird Day, following Sunday’s annual Audubon Bird Count. Here are some of the species likely to have been spotted. Above, heron makes a huge splash on New Year’s Eve for a tiny minnow meal on Timberneck Creek. Below, Gloucester resident Barbara King shared a number of photos of birds taken in her backyard at Wicomico. Cardinals were abundant, as shown in two of the photos, while a female red-bellied woodpecker is shown clinging to the side of one bird feeder and a tufted titmouse happily perches on another.
