FCCLA National Conference

Mathews County students Autumn Segalini, Abigail Henry and Natalie Davis, and their FCCLA advisor Michelle Williams, from left, along with parent Josh Segalini (not pictured) traveled to Orlando, Florida, last week to attend and compete at the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America National Leadership Conference. Davis presented the Weighted Angels Community Service Portfolio project and earned a bronze award. Henry presented the Sensory Support Backpack Display project and earned a silver medal. Segalini presented her Fashion Construction Level 1 “Dorothy’s Dress from the Wizard of Oz” costume and not only earned a silver award, but also placed in the top 10 and was recognized on the national stage. The three students and their chaperones were able to attend after-hours events at Epcot, Universal, and Aquatica, as well as networking with over 10,000 student leaders from all across the continental U.S., Hawaii, Alaska, and Puerto Rico. In addition to the students who attended, Thomas Hunter Middle School was also recognized with a $500 grant to extend another community service project “Every One, Bring One: Breakfast Bags to Help the Homeless and Those in Need.” All three of these young leaders have plans for their projects for next year and are appreciative of all the community members and organizations who helped finance their learning experience, Williams said.
