Farm Bureau awards $9,000 in scholarships

The Gloucester-Mathews Farm Bureau Board of Directors recently awarded scholarships totaling $9,000 to nine local students.

Presentations were made before the membership at the Annual Producer Dinner Meeting held Aug. 15 at Petsworth Baptist Church. The recipients were:

—Sam Cook, a sophomore at the University of Lynchburg who is studying economics;
—Joshua Hook, a sophomore at the University of Virginia who is studying economics;
—Joice Small, a sophomore at the University of Virginia;
—Daniel Hook, a senior at Virginia Tech who is studying mechanical engineering;
—Alex Mills, a senior at the University of Mary Washington who is studying psychology;
—Jessie Mills, a senior at the University of Mary Washington who is studying biomedical science;
—Joshua Mayer, a freshman at the College of William and Mary who is studying mathematics;
—Victoria King, a freshman at the North Carolina School for the Arts who is studying music composition; and
—Chelsea Armistead, who is studying to become a paralegal at Rappahannock Community College. She is also the recipient of the Larry N. Oliver Memorial Scholarship for her essay, “The Evolution of the American Farm Tractor from 1890 until present.”

Oliver was a longtime Gloucester-Mathews Farm Bureau Board member who served numerous terms as president and vice president before his passing in 2017. In recognition of his hard work and dedication to Farm Bureau, the board of directors unanimously voted to commemorate his legacy through the establishment of this special scholarship.
