Editorial: We pause to remember

Fields of bloodied bodies … the reason for Memorial Day.

Shaded lawns of green, well-tended graves … the places of sad farewells.

Memorial Day is the occasion that links these somber scenes. It recalls the horrors of war in spite of the peace of the burial grounds where flags are placed at headstones, and where someone has remembered those killed at the hands of an enemy five years ago, 95 years ago, 150 years ago.

More than the first long holiday of summer, much more, Memorial Day carries a meaning of its own to America’s people. As strong as liberty, as strong as freedom, as strong as the flag, is the force of memory.

They died so that we may live and prosper in a free country.
