Editorial: The right to vote

Virginia voters face a new rule this year: they must show photo ID when attending the polls.

Voters, please do not let this deter you from casting your ballots. There is not much time left, but registrars’ offices can provide this photo ID if you do not have one. The identification card is free.

Voting is a right, not a privilege. Any duly qualified citizen should be delighted to have the opportunity to vote. Sadly, hundreds of thousands, even millions, of citizens will stay home. Truly a midterm election does not have the pull of a presidential race or local ballot, and surely the overwhelming negativity of campaigns turns off voters.

But … each vote does make a difference. Just ask “Landslide Lynwood” Lewis, who won his seat in Virginia’s Senate in a special election this year by nine votes!
