Editorial: Our volunteers

Volunteers contribute uncounted millions of hours and dollars to help this area, to enrich lives of humans and animals, and to protect and enhance our natural surroundings.
You see them everywhere: fighting fires, responding to accidents, helping schoolchildren, serving and delivering meals, walking and playing with shelter animals, maintaining our parks and scenic waterways. They do not volunteer to win recognition.
There is, however, a way that we can recognize them.
Nominations are being taken through 5 p.m. on Monday, June 23, for the 2025 Virginia Governor’s Volunteerism & Community Service Awards. These nominations can be made online at servevirginia.org/awards.
A number of outstanding volunteers have received state and national recognition in years past for their contributions. We hope that spotlight will rest again in the future on our neighbors who give, and give, and keep giving, and enrich our community in a way that cannot be totaled in dollars and cents.
