Editorial: A monument for journalists

Legislation is proposed in Congress to allow a new memorial in Washington, D.C., for journalists killed in the line of duty.

According to the National Newspaper Association, “the Fallen Journalists Memorial Act of 2019 was introduced the week of the first anniversary of the shootings of five newspaper staffers” at the Capital-Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland. If approved, funding would come from private sources, NNA said.

Reporters here and abroad have died in the workplace, in wars, at the hands of terrorists, and during natural disasters, all while simply practicing the work to which they have been called.

We and our colleagues across the nation live and work today in a climate that can be hostile to journalism and the reporters who practice it; but we keep plugging. Will Congress remember those who were lost? We hope so.
