Editorial: A marker for Irene Morgan

The Virginia Department of Historic Resources recently approved a highway marker for Irene Morgan, the county native who was a pioneer for civil rights.

Her case preceded that of Rosa Parks by 11 years. Morgan had visited her parents in Gloucester County and boarded a bus to return to her home in Baltimore. Ordered to give up her seat for white passengers, she refused, was jailed, and took her case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, winning. The court decided that laws requiring segregation of passengers in interstate transportation were unconstitutional.

The marker, sponsored by Friends of the Museum, is proposed to be located at 2425 Hayes Road, where she got on the bus.
