EDITH MARGARET COATES

Edith Margaret Coates of Hayes, age 92, died peacefully with her family by her side on Jan. 12, 2019.

Mrs. Coates was a lifelong resident of Gloucester, a member of Groves Memorial Presbyterian Church and member of the choir. Known as Big Momma to her family, she was a master baker of cakes, a wide range of pound, jelly and walnut cakes. When not baking, gardening and growing roses were at the top of her daily list.

Husband, Charlie Coates Sr.; children, Barbara Jean Coates, Charlie Coates Jr.; brothers, Clarence West, Joseph West, Jimmy West, James Tyler West; sisters, Ruby Emerson, Isabelle Hall, and Mamie Coates, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her son, Calvin Coates; daughters, Elaine Shackelford, Betty Hogge; one brother, Eugene West; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service conducted by the Rev. David McKnight was held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2019, at Groves Memorial Presbyterian Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends at Hogg Funeral Home, Monday, Jan. 14, 2019, from 6-7:30 p.m.
