Drowning reported at Gloucester Point Beach

The body of an apparent drowning victim late Sunday afternoon at the Gloucester Point Beach was recovered by police Tuesday morning in the York River, according to the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office.

The body, believed to be that of Steven Kendall Wright, 50, of Richmond, was recovered approximately 42 hours after he was reported missing.

At about 4:30 p.m. Sunday, the Gloucester County Emergency Com-munications Center received a 911 call from an individual at the beach stating that an individual had not resurfaced after going into the York River.

Gloucester deputies responded along with partners from Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue, the York County Department of Fire and Life Safety, the Virginia Marine Police, the Virginia Conservation Police, the United States Coast Guard, and Camp Peary in an attempt to locate the individual.

Search and rescue efforts extended into Sunday evening, but were unable to locate the person at that time.

Shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday, police officers from Camp Peary operating their Marine Two vessel discovered a body floating face down in the York River. The body was located nearly half a mile from the Gloucester Point Fishing Pier near the middle of the river between Gloucester and York counties.

Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue assisted in the recovery of the body from the river. The body will be taken to the Tidewater office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Norfolk for positive identification and to determine the cause and manner of death.

The Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division will continue to work with the medical examiner to confirm the decedent’s identity and investigate the circumstances of his death.
