It was a week of dramatic highs and lows for the soccer programs at Mathews High School, with the JV squad staging a stunning comeback, the girls’ varsity experiencing both dominant victory and disappointing defeat, and the boys’ varsity maintaining their winning momentum.
The JV soccer team provided the most thrilling narrative of the three teams. In their first match, they faced Northumberland High and ultimately fell to a 3-0 defeat. However, showing remarkable determination, the JV Devils roared back in their second game against King William. Displaying improved teamwork, they turned the tables on their next adversary, securing a resounding 5-2 victory. Meredith Salvadori scored three of the five goals, followed by Eric Cardenas closing out the last two.
Meanwhile, the girls’ varsity soccer team started their week on a high note, delivering a dominant performance that resulted in an emphatic 7-0 victory against Northumberland. The Lady Devils demonstrated excellent offensive prowess and a solid defensive line, leaving their opponents with no opportunities on the goal. Lauren Johnson scored four of the seven goals, and Hailey Denkinger finished the night with the last three goals. Unfortunately, their winning streak was cut short in their second match. Despite their best efforts, they went 3-1 against King William on Monday, with Denkinger scoring the only goal for MHS 30 seconds into the first half.
The boys’ varsity soccer team, on the other hand, enjoyed a successful week, securing two consecutive victories. In their first match, they showcased their attacking strength against the Northumberland Indians, netting six goals in a comfortable 6-2 win. Two goals were scored by Stanley Ouma, followed by one goal each from Henry Sowers, Franklin Cardenas, Salvador Cardenas and Corey Zheng. They followed up with another solid performance, securing a 3-1 victory in their match against King William. Cardenas scored the first goal of the night, followed by two goals from Ouma, one of which was assisted by Cardenas.
MHS boys were scheduled to host King and Queen on Wednesday, followed by the Lady Devils’ contest with the Northumberland Indians in a make-up game.
Today, Thursday, April 17, the MHS girls will travel to Bethel High School for a solo game starting at 5:30.
