Do-it-yourself pottery painting studio opens at Point

York River Pottery Co., a paint-your-own-pottery studio, opened for business on Dec. 14 at Gloucester Point.

Stephanie Kessel, a stay-at-home mother with an artistic background, opened the business to provide supplemental income for her family and to continue her art interests.

Kessel said up to eight people can come to the studio at a time, up to a maximum of 20 customers a day. They can be inspired to be artistic by the view of the York River only yards away, she said.

Clients come to the studio, purchase items to paint, and then pay an hourly fee to use the studio. Stencils, stamps and paints are provided at the work stations.

There is a large selection of pottery items to be painted, with prices varying on the item or items purchased. A recent visit to the shop found Christmas and Hanukkah decorations awaiting painting, along with mugs, vases, plates, knick-knacks, garden pots and serving dishes.
