Devils split opening week

The Mathews High School varsity baseball team opened its season last week with two away games at Lancaster and Rappahannock. Mathews won the opener against Lancaster, 1-0, but fell to the Raiders, 6-2.

The Devils return eight seniors—Brian Owens, Marshall Barrack, Hunter Hudgins, Reggie Johnson, Logan Bell, Chad Lewis, Zack Jarosz and James Cook—who look to build on last year’s 18-4 record.

They opened the season on March 15 at Lancaster, last year’s state finalists. The Red Devils faced off against first-year varsity member Brandon Williams, looking to make a statement. Williams did so and more as he threw four shutout innings taking a no-decision. The top of the sixth proved to be the difference in the game as Logan Bell started the inning with a one-out single. Owens bunted him to second, and a flare by Cody Tunstall was the difference in the game, allowing Bell to score. The Blue Devils won as Tunstall and Ethan Armistead combined to complete the shutout.
