Devils fall to Generals 42-0 in playoffs

It was a disappointing conclusion to an otherwise stellar season.

All hopes of a state football title for Mathews came to an abrupt end Saturday afternoon at Ken Brown Field, as the visiting William Campbell Generals completely dominated the Mathews Blue Devils in the Eastern Section, Division 1 quarterfinals, 42-0.

"It was a great year, and I am very proud of our coaches, players, and community support," said MHS head coach Paul White. "Winning 10 games is not an easy task. The team had very good chemistry, leadership, and we were practically injury free.

"Seven teams on our schedule made the playoffs. Several made it to the second round and one will probably play for the championship, so our teams were very competitive," White added. "We made too many mistakes against a very good William Campbell team to advance to the next round."
