Devils fall to Eagles, 71-6

The Mathews High School varsity football team dropped to 0-2 following last Thursday’s trip to Montross. The Devils fell on the road to the Washington and Lee Eagles, 71-6.

“We could really see the difference between a very young team and an older and more mature team,” MHS head coach C.J. Kelly said following the defeat. “It was one of those games that causes us to look in the mirror and to challenge ourselves to be better than what we displayed.

“I told the team we will put this one behind us and we have to get back to work and keep working our fundamentals and fix our mistakes,” Kelly concluded.

Jovan Johnson scored the only points for Mathews in the game that ended in the third quarter due to lightning.

Mathews will look to pick up its first win on Friday when the Blue Devils host the Lancaster Red Devils in a 7 p.m. Market Days weekend contest. JV football
