Devils edge Chargers in soccer, 3-2

The Mathews High School varsity soccer team went into spring break on a positive note, beating the visiting Middlesex Chargers last Wednesday by a 3-2 margin. The JV Devils lost to Middlesex by the same 3-2 score.

After taking this week off for spring break, the varsity Devils return to action on Monday at home against Carver Academy, starting at 6 p.m. The JV and varsity teams travel to Northumberland next Wednesday, April 19, to face the Indians.

Last year, Mathews beat Middlesex by the slaughter rule twice. This year, the visiting Chargers had other ideas.

The game began with Stuart Anderson scoring a quick goal, giving Mathews a 1-0 lead. The Blue Devils became overconfident and slacked off, allowing Middlesex to tie the game at 1-1 by halftime.

In the second half, Mathews got on the scoreboard early, with a Jordan Bozza goal but a few minutes later, Middlesex answered with a goal of its own.
